The Floor Lab
The Floor Lab offers a modern approach to birth preparation, rooted in pain science, The Floor Lab's Pain in Birth, Understood helps you prepare for birth in a productive and individualized way. Emily's approach lands somewhere between medical jargon and hypno birthing. Giving you the insights of what actually matters when it comes to preparing for birth.

Pain in Birth, Understood
What it is:
✔️ A real look at how pain works - and what shapes it in birth
✔️ Real talk: we're not taking the sensation away - we're changing how you meet it
✔️ A head start on the hard moments - extending grace if they hit
✔️ Real agency, real information, and strategies you can actually use
What it isn't:
✖ Not a method that forces you to breathe a certain way or labour in a certain position
✖ Not about staying calm or relaxed - loud, primal, and messy are all welcome here
✖ Not a lecture in medical jargon and the "stages of labour"
✖ Not a promise of one birth over the other - it's about how informed you feel, no matter how baby arrives
ABOUT
Hi, I’m Emily — pelvic health physiotherapist, educator, and founder of The Floor Lab.
I created The Floor Lab to make pelvic health education feel clearer, more practical, and more human.
I completed my Kinesiology degree at the University of British Columbia before returning to Australia, where I was born, to complete my Doctor of Physiotherapy at the University of Melbourne. During my training and early clinical work, I spent time in maternity wards and prenatal outpatient clinics, where I developed a strong interest in pregnancy, birth, pelvic health, and recovery.
Since 2021, I’ve worked in private practice with a wide range of pelvic health clients, including people navigating pregnancy, postpartum recovery, pelvic pain, pain with sex, bladder and bowel symptoms, and persistent pain.
A big part of my work is helping people make sense of symptoms that feel confusing or overwhelming. Pain is rarely just about one thing. It can be influenced by the body, the brain, past experiences, fear, stress, movement, support, and the information we’ve been given.
My own experiences of pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, and changes in my pelvic floor have also shaped this work. They reminded me that even with access to information, it can still be hard to sort through the noise and understand what actually feels relevant, useful, and meaningful for you.
The Floor Lab is beginning with education around pain in birth. My goal is not to promise a specific birth outcome or tell you what choices to make. Instead, I want to help you understand what can shape the experience of pain, so you can approach birth feeling more informed, supported, and in control of your own decisions.
Birth is deeply personal. You deserve education that respects that.

D.C. - second time Mama
Emily’s program helped me feel confident and in control of my pain (and fear) while birthing my second child - things I didn’t feel the first time. She is so knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to preparing our amazing bodies and minds for all the steps of childbirth - before, during & after.
R.R. - second time Mama
It’s pretty amazing - I found it to be the most helpful thing for me during my second pregnancy, Pain in Birth, Understood takes a really unique approach including pain education, deconstructing fear, and how to break that down and at a certain point you realize you are going to go into labour, it is physical, and it is going to hurt - you only can hear ‘just breathe through it so much’ but that only helps so much. No one talks about pain, and how we process that, and how the body experiences that. This was really incredible for me and it was pretty transformative.
A.K. first time Mama
Pain in Birth, Understood covers important topics that is often overlooked in the traditional process of pregnancy. Personally, the concepts discussed throughout were ones that have not been discussed or brought up with my OB at all. 5/5 would recommend to another pregnant person!
